Apple tarts on tour – the secrets of the Tour de France riders’ food

Published 10/07/2013 | 08:52

The secrets of the Tour de France riders’ feeding bags are revealed by Paul Kimmage today in his latest exclusive video diary for Independent.ie.

As the cyclists reach stage 10 of the marathon race, Kimmage takes us inside the eating habits of the peloton. He gets a glimpse at the stack of high-energy food and drinks the competitors grab as they whizz past on their way to the finish in St Malo.

He chats to Sophie Roullois, the soigneur of the Garmin-Sharp team for which Irish stage winner Dan Martin rides, and discovers one of the treats in the bag is a little apple tart.

Follow Kimmage’s Tour diary every day on Independent.ie and read his weekly column in the Sunday Independent.
