Willie Donoghue has claimed light-flyweight gold at the AIBA World Junior Championships with a thrilling 30-27, 29-28,27-30 victory over the USA's Daniel Gonzalez in Ukraine.
Donoghue, who boxes out of the St Michael's Club in Athy, won the first round but two of the three judges gave the Californian the second to leave it all square going into the third.
The Irishman reasserted in the final round and all three judges gave him the round for victory on a split-decision.
“We’re absolutely thrilled with the victory, said Irish team manager Jim Walsh. “It was a close final but once again Willie showed his class to win gold for Ireland. What a performance!”
Ireland's Kieran Molloy and Sean Conroy won bronze medals at the Championships.
