Newly-wed jockey Katie Walsh has described how she and her famous father were in tears as he delivered a “classic” wedding speech.

The 28-year-old married her long term partner Ross O’Sullivan at a ceremony in Kill, co Kildare on July 19.

After a short honeymoon in Barcelona, Walsh is back in the saddle this week at the Galway Festival in Ballybrit and focusing on her riding duties but did reveal details of her big day.

On her dad’s eagerly- anticipated speech, she told Miriam O’Callaghan on RTE Radio One this morning: “It was an absolute classic as usual, as soon as he started to cry I started to cry.

“We had an absolutely great day, the weather was beautiful. We danced the night away and I think we’re all still recovering from it.

“It absolutely flies by but I suppose every bride says that. There isn’t much time to take a second to take it in.”

She was unsuccessful with her two mounts yesterday but did have a tip for the Galway Plate tomorrow

“Jacksonslady has a chance in the Plate tomorrow. I’d have a little on her anyway,” she added.

Katie sister-in-law Nina Carberry will miss this week’s festival because of a broken collarbone but should return for the autumn.

“It will probably be the end of August before I’ll be back. It feels good but I have to let it settle and hopefully I’ll come back and have a good winter,” Nina said.
