Katie Taylor cuts down top golfers and takes indirect pop at McIlroy and Lowry for Olympic withdrawal
Shane Lowry became the latest star golfer to withdraw from the Olympics this afternoon, citing fears around the Zika virus as the reason that he won't be competing.
Lowry follows World Number One golfer Jason Day - who also made himself unavailable today - and Rory McIlroy in withdrawing due to Zika.
However, many are accusing the trio - and other golfers who won't be taking part - of using the virus as an excuse to get out of playing at the summer games.
Another one bites the dust. I wonder what excuse the golfers would of made if there was no virus. https://t.co/z5GUgQVEc2— Katie Taylor (@KatieTaylor) June 28, 2016
We can count Katie Taylor in that camp. The Bray boxer will compete in Rio in August despite the concern around Zika, and she took to her Twitter account today to pour scorn on those using the disease as an excuse for not competing.
It is interesting that Irish athletes appear to be receiving different medical advice on the potential ramifications of travelling to Brazil at this time.
