But the interim-player manager's selection of the 18-year-old, who has featured for United's Under-21 side this season was more than justified, after he scored twice on a stunning first-team debut.
The prolific Dutchman Van Nistelrooy, who went on to score 95 goals in 150 league matches scored twice on his debut for the club in the division, in United's 3-2 home win over Fulham on 19 August 2001.
And at the age of just 18 years and 156 days, Wilson, from Stoke-on-Trent, also became the fourth youngest United goalscorer in the Premier League.
Youngest United Premier League goalscorers
F Macheda (17 years, 226 days)
D Welbeck (17 years, 355 days)
Rafael (18 years, 122 days)
J Wilson (18 years, 156 days)
Robin van Persie, who replaced Wilson in the 64th minute, said that it was a "special" debut for the youngster.
"James played really well," Van Persie said. "I know how hard it is to make your [United] debut - I made mine when I was about 29! I know how special it can be. He made it very special for himself and for everyone tonight. To score two goals is really special."
