New Waterford manager Michael Ryan got his reign off to a winning start as his side enjoyed a six-point win over UCC in Carriganore.

But Ryan will be somewhat alarmed after his side faded in the last quarter, giving UCC a chance to salvage something from the game.

Waterford were slick early on, with Michael Walsh at centre-forward always prominent and Martin O'Neill and Maurice Shanahan finding the net. They deteriorated after the break as UCC fought back, but ultimately they had done enough.
