Waterford v Galway: Game at a glance

Monday July 27 2009

Man of the match

Tony Browne (Waterford)

Dan Shanahan's introduction swung the game Waterford's way, but it was men like Tony Browne (one first-half error apart) who enabled them to hang on in there.

Turning point

Waterford's goal in the 68th minute. Trailing by four points, they needed a goal to rescue the day and the subs delivered with Shanahan setting up Shane Walsh for the vital strike.

Talking point

So much for those who claimed the Deise's ambition had run dry. Their spirited recovery pointed to a team whose targets are set as high as ever.

Ref watch

Both teams vented their frustration with Diarmuid Kirwan's decisions at various times. It was understandable because some of them were baffling.

They said

"We made changes today that worked. I'm no genius. All I can do is try my best for the team. I'm proud of the lads the way they fought today."

Davy Fitzgerald (Waterford)

"When you leave a team hanging on you always run the risk of being caught and that is what happened to Galway."

John McIntyre (Galway)
