Varley's Westmeath heroics not enough to stop St Peter's

THIS clash at the Eire Og ground in Carlow was restricted to 20 minutes per half yesterday as Westmeath Schools were late arriving at the venue due to a transport breakdown on the road.

The game, which had a scheduled 3.15 throw-in, was in doubt owing to failing light, but following consultation with both sides, Kilkenny referee Eamon Mansfield decided to go ahead with a game of 40 minutes duration.

Played in a downpour, scores were at an absolute premium. Michael Murray, the Westmeath full-forward and their only scorer, pointed a 10th-minute free, but on 18 minutes Wexford county minor Andrew Kenny drove a penalty to the Westmeath net to leave Peter's 1-0 to 0-1 ahead at the break.

The sides were level 1-1 to 0-4 entering the final four minutes, but Peter's finished stronger and a brace of points by midfielder Thomas Campbell and right full-forward Jack O'Connor gave the Wexford college victory.

Peter's held an edge in hurling ability, defending strongly with defenders Seán Murphy, Andrew Butler and county minor Edward O'Byrne all in outstanding form.

However, the Man of the Match award went to Liam Varley, the Westmeath full-back and Castletowngeoghan clubman, who gave an absol- utely storming performance.
