Thurles regroup to see off dogged Colman's challenge
WHAT should have been a comfortable passage into the quarter-finals for Thurles CBS became a little rocky towards the end of this encounter as they allowed St Colman's back into contention.
However, they regrouped to seal victory with a couple of late scores.
Dominance in most of the key areas allowed Thurles to build up a 0-10 to 0-3 half-time lead, with Conor Hammersley and Stephen Cahill the main scorers and Seamus Kennedy, John Ryan and Pat Ralph also influential in this period.
However, after Sean Maher put them eight points ahead five minutes into the second half, the CBS team dozed off and went 20 minutes without scoring, while allowing St Colman's to add four points -- two apiece from Thomas Condon and Anthony Spillane.
The last of these scores could well have been a goal, which would have really put the frighteners on the Thurles support, with Spillane's tight-angled shot flying just over the bar.
But that seemed to revive Thurles and in the closing minutes, they copperfastened the deal with a short-range free from Cahill and a nice effort on the run from Kevin Slattery.
