Man of the match
Joe Canning (Galway)
Class and deadly accuracy by Canning derailed the Dubs' best efforts at crucial periods of the match. Without him, Galway would have struggled to win this one.
Turning point
The second goal of the game by Canning. It came in the 51st minute when Dublin were just three points behind, but at a stroke they were six down and Galway got a renewed confidence and momentum that carried them through to the finish.
Talking point
Is 'second-year syndrome' catching up with the Dubs who went from league champs in 2011 to relegation this season? And can Galway's young guns rise to the challenge they face in the Leinster championship? A fascinating provincial campaign lies ahead.
Ref watch
John Sexton of Cork didn't miss much and while no ref will meet with total approval from both teams, he dealt calmly and efficiently with any potential flashpoints. A good game.
They said
Anthony Cunningham (Galway manager):
"We've secured our position in Division 1. It's a very difficult league and these guys will learn from today and drive on from it."
Anthony Daly (Dublin manager):
"Fair play to them, they won it deservedly. No arguments."
