Ger 'Sparrow' O'Loughlin got his managerial career with Clare off to a good start at Meelick when his side had a hard-earned win against Waterford IT in the Waterford Crystal hurling cup.
And it was O'Loughlin's decision to send in Mark Flaherty as a substitute that proved crucial as Flaherty scored the last three points from frees.
Waterford IT, behind by a point, 0-7 to 0-6, at the interval, drew level eight minutes from the end when Ray McLoughney blasted to the Clare net.
Gerry Quinn marked his first appearance for Clare since being omitted for a breach of discipline by Mike McNamara in the middle of last year's league with a point twelve minutes into the second half, before Flaherty sealed the victory.
