South Down produced a brilliant opening 20 minutes to lay the foundations for victory at Fontenoy Park, Liatroim. Goals from Eoin McGuinness in the second and 10th minutes saw the Northerners lead 2-5 to 0-1 midway through the first half.
Longford staged a mini revival, with a Patrick Cullen goal cutting the deficit to 2-7 to 1-6 at the break. Liam Morgan kept South Down well ahead from frees but in the final quarter Longford found their form.
Seamus Hannon and Eoin Donnellan kept their side in touch, and Longford were three behind when they were awarded a penalty. However, Donnellan's effort was pushed over the bar as South Down booked a semi-final spot against Donegal.
