Derry avoided falling victim to an upset in their first appearance in this competition, when they saw off the challenge of Trinity College at UCD.
The students put up a real fight in the first half and Conor Donegan's strike left them just two points behind at the break, 1-13 to 2-8.
However, three unanswered Paddy Henry scores allowed Derry to pull away from Trinity early in the second half, and Diarmuid Shields' goal made it a comfortable finish for the visitors.
