Shefflin returns for Wexford showdown

Henry Shefflin has been named in the Kilkenny line-up for their Leinster hurling championship clash against Wexford tomorrow evening.

The top scorer in the history of the hurling championship makes his return at Wexford Park having recovered from the cruciate injury he picked up in last year's All-Ireland semi-final win over Cork and aggravated after 12 minutes of the All-Ireland final defeat by Tipperary.

And his good form in a recent challenge game against Waterford, where he helped himself to eight points, has been rewarded with a start in the full-forward position.

In total, just eight of the side that began last year's decider retain their starting spots, with the likes of Eddie Brennan and James 'Cha' Fitzpatrick left on the bench.

Tommy Walsh hasn't recovered from injury to take part and isn't named in the squad, but Michael Fennelly starts at midfield, despite damaging his hand in the league match against Offaly. Colin Fennelly is named in the full-forward line.

There are two changes in the Wexford side. Paul Roche has recovered from injury to take his spot at corner-back, with Ciaran Kenny shifting out to his regular place at wing-back. Michael Jacob is the one to make way for Colm Bonnar's men, while Garret Sinnott is preferred to Eanna Martin at full-forward.

Meanwhile, Jason Ryan has named the same Wexford side as that which defeated Offaly last time out for their Leinster SFC last-eight clash with Westmeath, which acts as a curtain-raiser to the hurling game.

There was good news for the Lake County men as talisman Dessie Dolan was passed fit to start the clash when Pat Flanagan named the Garrycastle man in his side last night.

Dolan starts at top of the left with Denis Glennon at full-forward and dual star Paul Greville at No 13.

Darragh Daly and Denis Corroon make up a new-look championship midfield, but there is no place in the side for AFL-bound John Heslin.

Louth's Peter Fitzpatrick has sprung a surprise by naming Mick Fanning in his side to play Carlow this weekend. Fanning has just recently rejoined the panel after returning from his travels abroad.
