Sean Og O hAilpin's recall to the Cork hurling squad has come almost a year to the day that Denis Walsh looked to have ended his inter-county career, writes Colm Keys.
Unsurprisingly, O hAilpin was recalled to the 32-man squad released over the weekend by a management team headed by the man who gave him his inter-county debut in 1996 and a coach that he was close to when he captained Cork in 2005.
Jimmy Barry-Murphy and Ger Cunningham were always likely to offer O hAilpin an opportunity to wind up his inter-county career on his own terms. Jerry O'Connor has retired while Kieran Murphy is unavailable due to work commitments.
Michael Cussen, who quit the football squad for the hurling squad in late 2009, has been left out as has Ray Ryan, who captained the squad during the end days of Gerald McCarthy's reign earlier that year.
Damien Cahalane is an interesting inclusion, which is seen as a coup for the hurling management because of his dual ability. Donal Og Cusack is again joined by regular understudies, Martin Coleman and Anthony Joyce.
