Saffrons keep up their stranglehold

Antrim 2-20 Armagh 2-12

Antrim made it 10 Ulster titles on the trot at Casement Park yesterday, but were pushed all the way by an Armagh side contesting their first provincial final for 65 years.

Saffrons manager Dinny Cahill made 10 changes from the Carlow qualifier, but they didn't have it all their own way. After nine minutes it was 0-3 apiece, with Armagh notching the opening points through Ryan Gaffney and Conor Corvan. Ciaran Herron then got Antrim off the mark, with Karl McKeegan levelling matters.

Herron saw red in the 58th minute for a second yellow card, just seconds before Paul McCormack blasted into the Antrim net. Antrim had bagged the game's first goal on 10 minutes when Colm McFall pounced to put them into the lead for the first time 1-3 to 0-3.

Armagh's Conor Corvan flicked a goal to leave the scores 1-12 to 1-6 in Antrim's favour at the interval. After an hour the score stood at 1-18 to 1-11, when McCormack goaled to give Armagh some hope, but time got the better of them and Joey Scullion's goal in injury time closed the game out.
