A sharper, hungrier Roscommon proved too strong for an out-of-sorts Monaghan in this scrappy game played in breezy conditions in Inniskeen.

Roscommon were on top throughout, two first-half goals by Cillian Egan and Ronan O'Mara giving them a cushion.

Monaghan's cause was not helped by being reduced to 14 men with the dismissal of Sean Leonard just before half-time, when the score was 2-7 to 0-4.

In the second half Monaghan did make a fight of it and with a bit of luck might have found the net on a couple of occasions.

However, the extra man left them battling against superior odds.
