Ref forced to call early end after injury to Kenny

Carlow 0-13
Offaly 1-10
Walsh Shield (sh) final (Abandoned after 73 minutes)

FOLLOWING a serious injury to Offaly's David Kenny, this clash at Dr Cullen Park on Saturday had to be abandoned.

There was serious concern for Kenny, who sustained concussion following a fall three minutes into extra-time.

He was treated on the field by Carlow team doctor Tom Foley, placed in a neck brace and taken by ambulance to St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny as a precaution. It later transpired that the injury was not as serious as was first feared.

Offaly team manager Joe Dooley said it was a pity the way the game ended.

"It's unfortunate that David has got injured and hopefully, he will be okay," he said.

The long delay as a result of the injury, allied to fading light, led to the abandonment of the game.

Up to that the home outfit had provided their fans with plenty to enthuse about.

With 10 minutes remaining, they looked on course for a shock victory when leading 0-13 to 1-7.

And Kevin Ryan's side spurned several chances to extend that lead to four points, leaving the Faithful county within striking distance.

Two Joe Bergin points and one from Brian Carroll rescued Dooley's men and forced the tie into extra-time.

The sides were level on five occasions, including half-time (0-7 to 1-4), so the fact that the teams were level when the game reached its premature end was probably a fair reflection of the action overall.

The Offaly goal came from Carroll on nine minutes and put his side in front, but Carlow showed tremendous spirit and looked the sharper for much of the game.
