A well-crafted goal just on half-time from NUI Galway's Shane Quinlan set the western college on the way to a nine-point win over Carlow yesterday.

Quinlan's goal put NUIG into a 1-7 to 1-4 lead and they added a further point before half time. In the second half, the superior pace, team-work and finish of the Galway side saw them take control of the game.

NUIG, fielding three of Clare's U-21 All-Ireland-winning team of 2009 and a total of nine Banner County players, simply cruised to victory in the second half.

Finian Coone scored 0-10 for the winners, all from placed balls, before being dismissed in the final minutes for a second yellow card.

This was Carlow's entry to the big time after successive Christy Ring Cup victories but they were without a number of established players.
