A YOUNG Derry side were made to grind out a victory against an even younger GMIT to advance to the last four at Celtic Park.
In a dull first half in which the Oak Leafers led 0-6 to 0-3 at the break, courtesy of four Ruairi Convery frees, the visitors were made to rue seven wides.
Ger Rogan had to look to his bench to see his side over the line and Chrissy Convery rattled home from a break inside the 13 with 20 minutes remaining.
Paul Hoban was outstanding for the students and the centre half-back beat five defenders on the Derry goal line to find the net from a 20-metre free, before Breandan Quigley raised a second green flag, which allowed the hosts to open up a six-point lead.
A late flurry from GMIT had last year's Ulster finalists shaken, but, despite Conor O'Donnell pouncing to find the net and close the deficit to the minimum, Derry hung on.
