PEARSES 2-13 ; ST IBAR'S 1-5 PEARSES celebrated their 25th anniversary in great style when they won their third All-Ireland club title in a row and fifth in all when they defeated St Ibar's Shelmalier in the final at Duggan Park, Ballinasloe yesterday.

Played in heavy conditions, Leinster champions St Ibar's were first off the mark with a Brigid Curran point in the third minute. However, Pearses, who have never lost a club final, looked threatening and gradually the Glynn machine began to work with player of the match and top scorer Sharon Glynn knocking over their opening point four minutes later.

While Ibar's tried hard, in particular Kate Kelly, their finishing power was lacking, and their half-back line found the Pearses' forwards a handful.

Suddenly, it all began to click for Pearses with two goals within two minutes the first from Shauna Ward and the second from Sharon Glynn from a 30-metre free. It left the champions ahead by 2-7 to 0-3 at the break.

Playing into the town end in the second half, Pearses, aided by a gentle wind, took control and kept Ibar's to 1-2. The late consolation goal came from substitute Leona Tector who hand-passed to the net with six minutes remaining.

Pearses put in a storming finish, knocking over five points in the final four minutes to clinch their fifth All-Ireland title.
