O'Sullivan leads Rebel charge
Cork 3-17 Waterford 0-18
The Allianz National Hurling League Division 1 burst into life last night with Cork seeing off a valiant Waterford side with surprising ease under lights at Pairc Uí Rinn.
After a sluggish start, the home side got into their stride and showed far too much class for the visitors -- racking up a well deserved 10 point lead (3-08 -- 0-7) by half time and not letting up till the opposition were well taken care of.
Cork full-forward Paudie O'Sullivan and right half-forward Conor Lehane stole the show for the Rebels as they dominated the attacking zones. The forwards as per usual will get most of the credit but inspirational defensive work from Shane O'Neill and Ross Cashman at the rear were also well worthy of mention.
Cork manager Jimmy Barry Murphy would have been delighted with his side's display as the clinical nature of their play showed little signs of early season rust.
Waterford were the quicker out of the blocks with Paul O'Brien and Kevin Moran and Martin O'Neill rattling over a point a piece inside the first five minutes while the Rebels were restricted to shooting from distance.
A brace of goals from O'Sullivan and a tasty net finder from Cathal Naughton were the key opening period strikes as Cork inflicted their dominance on a Waterford side that just couldn't keep pace.
Cork now march on to play the Dubs in two weeks time while Waterford can look forward to facing Kilkenny in round two.
