Down minors had an easy victory and led 2-8 to 0-0 at half-time with Michael Conway and Sean Mageean getting the goals.

Donegal got their first point on 36 minutes through Ronan McDermott. Their efforts were rewarded again in the 48th minute when a long-range free from Conor Harkin found the Down net.

Donegal had further points from Harkin and Hugh O'Donnell but they were never a match for their opponents.

Cavan hurling got a timely shot in the arm courtesy of a spirited first-round victory over Monaghan at Kingspan Breffni Park.

The Breffni men hit the jackpot before half-time when a driving run by John Carney ended with James Galligan goaling in the 26th minute. Cavan led 1-4 to 0-5 at the interval. Galligan scored a second goal in the 34th minute and then Niall Garland's long-range effort found the Cavan net. Sub Conor Crowe's goal was enough to see Cavan book a date with Armagh.

A clearly superior Armagh side hammered a home side that had 13 players underage for county minor next year.

All eight forwards used got on the scoresheet sharing 10 goals between them with midfielder Finnuan Burns grabbing the other.

Mattie Lennon fired 2-10 of his side's total while David McCreesh also caused havoc and netted his own brace. Eoin Robb bagged two goals of his own before Brian McDermott's consolation goal for Fermanagh.

Derry's facile win raised questions over the wisdom of organising one Ulster MHC for all counties.

Brendan Rodgers and Gerard Bradley netted in the first half to secure a 2-6 to 0-0 interval lead. Dominic Mullan, Oran McFlynn and Shane Farren, who later played for the senior side, added goals.

Tyrone's skipper Tiarnan Morgan and Derry's Michael Taggart got straight red cards 10 minutes into the second half.
