'Nure rock to GAA beat

Friday November 27 2009

TERENURE College usually rock to the thud of a rugby ball on Saturday mornings, but it will be different tomorrow when the famous south Dublin school marks a historic development by opening its new GAA pitch.

GAA President Christy Cooney will perform the official opening at 10.45, after which a Dublin Development squad -- managed by Pat Gilroy -- will play a Terenure invitational team, managed by former Dublin star Anton O'Toole and captained by recently retired Wexford full-back, Philip Wallace, a teacher in the college.

The Terenure team will feature players from local clubs, including St Jude's, Ballyboden St Enda's, Templeogue Synge Street and Ballinteer St John's.

Terenure College, which was the first school to be affiliated to the GAA in 1885, is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, while the GAA marks its 125th anniversary. So, the latest link-up comes at an appropriate time for both.

Tomorrow's game will throw in at 11.0.
