Nolan's red ends Carlow heroics

SECOND-half goals from Paul Morris and substitute Rory Jacob rescued Wexford from potential defeat against a resolute Carlow side in which Carlow finished with 13 men and the visitors with 14.
The final score in this fractious NHL Division 1B tie at Dr Cullen Park was harsh on Carlow, who recovered from early second-half arrears of 1-9 to 0-8 to twice post one-point leads.
But despite a heroic effort by the home side, they faded in the final minutes when reduced to 13 men and a flurry of late Wexford scores, including Jacob's well-taken goal, secured the points.
Carlow dominated most of the first half, but the concession of frees proved costly.
Referee Brian Gavin issued straight red cards to Carlow No 12 Marty Kavanagh and Wexford full-back Tomas Waters following a fracas on the half-hour. When Carlow's effective full-back Eoin Nolan was sent off late on for a second yellow card, the game was up for Carlow and with Wexford 1-15 to 0-15 to the good, Jacob raced through to crash home an insurance goal.
Wexford manager Liam Dunne said afterwards that he would like to review the DVD of the Waters sending-off, expressing the belief the referee "took the soft option".
