In the absence of the recently retired John Mullane, Waterford's forward line misfired and hit 13 wides. They also spurned three goal opportunities and missed a second-half penalty.

The Deise's Shane O'Sullivan struck four first-half points and Richie Foley chipped in with three. Kieran Morris and Eamonn Murphy kept the students in touch, before they struck for a goal on 32 minutes through Paul Kelly to lead by 1-8 to 0-11 at half-time.

With Morris accurate from frees, the students held a 1-15 to 0-15 lead entering the final quarter. Despite the best efforts of O'Sullivan and Seamus Prendergast, Waterford struggled for scores and Jake Dillon blasted a 54th-minute penalty over the bar. The students piled on the scores in the last 10 minutes and will face Clare in the last eight next weekend.
