After their stirring win over Tyrone in Inniskeen last weekend, Monaghan have suffered a blow with the news that defenders Damien Freeman and Gary McQuaid have withdrawn from the panel.

Both are believed to have cited a lack of work and their desire to find employment as the reason for the decision though McQuaid has not ruled out a come-back before the championship begins.

Elsewhere, Conor Dervan will make his first appearance for Galway's hurlers since the 2008 championship when he starts against Tipp in Thurles on Sunday.

The Mullagh defender was not included in the Galway squad last year and has only recently returned from a 12-week ban along with two other Mullagh players.

Dervan starts at wing-back in place of Donal Barry, while James Skehill takes over between the sticks from Colm Callanan.

the news from the Galway footballers was not so good, though, as it was confirmed that Sean Armstrong will miss the rest of the league after picking up a hamstring injury against Cork.

Clare defender Gerry Quinn suffered a recurrence of his groin injury and may miss Sunday's NHL clash with Wexford, who will also be without Darren Stamp, Willie Doran and PJ Nolan.

Meanwhile, Joe Canning will be fit for Portumna's bid to become the first team to win three All-Ireland club titles in a row next week. He returned to training last night after his exploits with Limerick IT in the Fitzgibbon Cup.

Mayo U-21 boss Ray Dempsey has named three senior panellists in his side to face Leitrim this weekend, with Aidan O'Shea flanked by Neil Douglas and Alan Freeman.
