McHugh points the way

Monaghan 0-15
South Down 0-10

Monaghan secured their opening points with a merited win over South Down in Ballela yesterday.

The sides were level at 0-3 each at the end of the first quarter and two late frees by Paul O'Neill for South Down left them level at 0-7 each at half-time.

Monaghan restarted strongly. Michael McHugh, Brian McGuigan and Ronan Meegan all pointed from play after the interval. Eoghan Donnelly and Michael McHugh then exchanged points before Sean Leonard increased Monaghan's lead. Following dismissals of Down's Michael Cunningham and Aiden Brown and Monaghan's James Connolly, both sides exchanged points as Farney held on.
