Limerick manager Donal O'Grady was delighted with this result but conceded that if the visitors to the Gaelic Grounds had taken more of their chances, the result would have been different.

Two serious injuries upset the rhythm of the contest.

Limerick's Niall Moran was an early casualty with a suspected neck problem. Then, at the start of the second half, after Pat Tobin had blasted in Limerick's goal, Laois goalkeeper Patrick Mullaney was stretchered off, also with a neck injury, which required a nine-minute hold-up as he was removed to hospital.

It was a sluggish performance by Limerick, who had to rely on a strong closing 10 minutes to maintain their unbeaten record.

Laois had the benefit of a strong breeze in the first half. The sides were level five times before Sean Burke scored the last point to have Laois in front 0-9 to 0-8 at the break, thanks mainly to Willie Hyland and Owen Holohan.

Resumed

Tobin's goal, from a lay-off by Kevin Downes, followed by a Richie McCarthy point when play resumed after the Mullaney injury, edged Limerick a goal in front, 1-9 to 0-9.

A Hyland free and a marvellous point by Eoin Costelloe left only a point between the sides with six official minutes remaining -- by which point Laois had 10 wides compared to nine for Limerick.

McCarthy, Seamus Hickey and McCarthy again had Limerick motoring well, but only a goal separated them following another Hyland point.

But two more McCarthy points and another by Paul Browne made it safe for the hosts, who had excellent performances by Tom Condon, Seamus Hickey, Brian Geary in defence and Donal O'Grady and Paul Browne in midfield. The attack, however, was not overly impressive.

Laois will be disappointed that they did not get a draw. Hyland's contribution was immense, but in general thay lacked cohesion and their final tally of 11 wides told its own story.
