Mary Immaculate produced a strong finish in Carnmore to book their place in the quarter-finals.
GMIT started the better and Aidan Lynch notched their goal on eight minutes. However, the winners responded by hitting 1-5 without reply to seize control, Luke O'Farrell blasting home their goal after 14 minutes.
O'Farrell, man-of-the- match Colm Galvin, John Conlon (2) and Brian O'Halloran all landed points to enable Mary I to lead at the break, 1-8 to 1-2.
The third quarter was hard fought, with four points divided equally, but then a burst of GMIT pressure had Mary I in some bother.
Scores from Paul Hoban and Conor O'Donnell brought GMIT to within three, but William Hickey struck a crucial 57th minute goal for Mary I and Conlon (2) and O'Halloran then lofted over the insurance points for Eamon Cregan's improving side.
