Maher strike holds off Pat's challenge
IT Carlow 1-14 St Pat's 0-13
A 39th-minute goal from Laois player Stephen Maher, which put IT Carlow into a 1-10 to 0-7 lead, provided his side with the necessary breathing space to overcome a spirited challenge from visitors St Patrick's College, Drumcondra.
The home side were never headed and led 0-5 to 0-1 entering the second quarter, before points for Pat's from a Niall Price penalty, two Jack McGrath frees and one from midfielder Enda Morrissey, levelled matters.
IT Carlow led 0-7 to 0-6 at half-time and although McGrath levelled from a 34th minute free, Ian Byrne's long-range point put the hosts back in front. and then Stephen Maher, who finished with 1-4, scored the game's only goal.
McGrath's accuracy from placed balls kept Pat's in touch, but with Ritchie Doyle, Joe Carroll and Enda Malone strong in defence for Carlow, the Dublin college were unable to close the gap.
