Lillis does the trick
Cumann na mBunscol finals day had its usual share of thrills and spills yesterday as nine hurling and camogie finals were decided at Croke Park.
The day got off to a flier when Scoil Eoin Baiste, Belgrove, overcame St Mary's from Rathfarnham. The winners showed all the hallmarks of their trainer, Kilkenny senior Richie Hogan, with Sean O'Shea firing in their first goal after a superb initial save by Jack Cadell.
Ben Kelly and Conor Mealy raised green flags for the Rathfarnham school but Belgrove finished strongly with a Kevin Lillis hat-trick in addition to scores from Tom O'Flaherty, Paddy Smyth, Cathal Ryan and Rory Clarke to help them claim the Sciath Herald.
Next up was a contest between Bayside SNS and St Fiachra's SNS with the former producing an excellent performance to claim the Corn Aghais.
George Bodor and Carl Brady hit excellent points in the first half, with Cillian Costello's goal three minutes before the break pushing his side five points clear. St Fiachra's fought back in the second half, but Bodor added two goals towards the end to settle the tie.
It was the girls' turn in the Corn Bean Ui Phuirseil, as 2-2 from Karen O'Keeffe saw Pius X, Terenure, defeat St Colmcille's by four points.
O'Keeffe's return turned the game and, despite Colmcille's fighting to the end, the Terenure girls confirmed their win with a late point by Niamh Mahon.
The final match pitted Scoil San Treasa against Scoil Lorcan, with the Mount Merrion school producing a fine display to secure Sciath Marino.
Michael Mullin, Anthony Quinn and Sean Igoe did most of the scoring for San Treasa against a Scoil Lorcan team that included 1-3 from Micheal Wylde.
The remaining finals saw victories for Scoil Loreto, Scoil San Treasa, Scoil Mhuire Marino, Scoil Malachy and Scoil Naithi.
