Lehane leads goal-rush to sink Colman's
Saturday November 21 2009
MIDLETON CBS assured themselves of a place in the quarter-finals with a comfortable victory over Cork rivals St Colman's at Mallow yesterday.
With both schools needing the win to be assured of continuing in the competition, this local derby clash fell way short of what was expected. Hurling with far more authority, Midleton blitzed the Fermoy side with five goals in a devastating opening half and there was no way back for St Colman's.
Conor Lehane began the goal rush in the fifth minute and two further majors by Stephen Moore, a second by Lehane and one by Brian Hartnett had Midleton 5-3 to 0-5 in front at the interval.
St Colman's enjoyed the lion's share of play in the second half but could never break down a resolute Midleton defence in which goalkeeper William McCarthy was outstanding, and while they outscored their opponents n the second period, they never looked like overhauling that huge half-time deficit.
