Kerry were put to the pin of their collar to withstand a tremendous second-half rally from 14-man Down in Killarney.

The Kingdom revelled in the wide expanses of Fitzgerald Stadium in the opening half and went in at the interval ahead by 2-16 to 1-5, with Darragh O'Connell having contributed 0-7.

However, they lost their way completely in the second half as Down resumed with three quick points only to have Gareth Johnson red-carded in the 46th minute for a dangerous pull on Tom Murnane.

That looked like curtains for Down, but the visitors kept at it -- they outscored Kerry 2-12 to 0-7 in the second period -- and it took a late point from the excellent Liam Boyle to ensure victory for Kerry.
