Kelly to the rescue for Pearses

Padraig Pearses 1-13 Four Roads 0-16 ROSCOMMON SHC FINAL

CATHAL KELLY scored a brilliant late point to earn a dramatic draw for Padraig Pearses in Athleague.

Four Roads, searching for their fifth title in succession, looked to have done enough when they opened up a 0-15 to 0-9 advantage with nine minutes remaining.

However, a 52nd-minute goal by Tomas Sweeney ignited a Pearses revival and they showed commendable character to force a share of the spoils in a thrilling finale.

The sides were well matched early on but Four Roads gradually gained the initiative and opened up a 0-9 to 0-5 interval advantage.

Four Roads continued to dominate and Robbie Kelly's 51st-minute point from play seemed to have put them into a match-winning position but Pearses' late rally, rounded off by Kelly's fine equaliser, gave the pre-match underdogs another day out.
