Kelly secures a point for Rossies

Mayo 0-18 Roscommon 1-15

Published 25/02/2013 | 04:00

A POINTED free deep into injury-time from Cathal Kelly earned Roscommon an unlikely share of the spoils in a foul-ridden tie in Castlebar.

Mayo, who had dual-star Keith Higgins sent off after a second yellow card in the closing minutes, appeared to be en route to victory thanks to the superb free-taking of Kenny Feeney who nailed 13 points from placed balls, including one gem of a sideline cut from 40 metres out.

His final effort just on full time seemed to have swung it for Mayo, but a harsh call for over-carrying by a Mayo defender gave Roscommon a chance for a late reprieve which they grasped.

A two-point interval lead of 0-10 to 1-5 just about reflected Mayo's slight edge in the first half after they had been hit by an early goal as Noel Connaughton punished slack marking in the Mayo defence after 11 minutes.
