Johnston's hurling cameo
SEANIE Johnston started for Coill Dubh hurlers in the first round of the Kildare SHC at Clane yesterday and therefore is eligible to make his debut for the Kildare footballers against Meath in the Leinster semi-final today.
The former Cavan footballer needed to have a club championship game under his belt before he could line out for Kildare in the Leinster and All-Ireland championships.
With no Kildare club football action on the immediate horizon, the only avenue available to Johnston was to play some part in St Kevin's sister club Coill Dubh's SHC clash yesterday. After a long-running saga Johnston was finally granted a transfer to St Kevin's from Cavan Gaels earlier this month and is also a registered member of Coill Dubh.
But even the conclusion to this farcical transfer switch was not straightforward -- Johnston met the Coill Dubh hurling team on Friday night after serious reservations were expressed about him being parachuted into the starting 15 for their first championship match of the season against Eire Og/Corrachoill at 4.0 yesterday afternoon.
He started the game but was replaced by Declan Flaherty after just 45 seconds. Johnston received a decent round of applause when taken off at the first possible opportunity.
