TIMMY HAMMERSLEY fired a magnificent total of 13 points as Waterford IT overcame defending champions UCC at the Mardyke and secured a home quarter-final against DIT next week.
The Tipperary attacker's free-taking was brilliant, particularly a monster effort from inside his own half in the 58th minute.
He also demonstrated his all-round talent by registering five points from play.
In contrast UCC were hugely ineffective here and now face a tough trip to UL in order to maintain their interest in the competition. The Cork college had got off to a dream start when Stephen Moylan broke through the Waterford defence and fired a rasping shot into the net after just 30 seconds.
However, they never managed to build on that and, with Hammersley's help, WIT were ahead 0-9 to 1-5 at the break.
Points from substitute Bill Beckett and wing-forward Robert White enabled UCC to regain the initiative early in the second half, but WIT hit back to lead 0-12 to 1-7 after 41 minutes.
The match remained in the balance entering the final 10 minutes after UCC's Luke O'Farrell, who excelled when introduced as a substitute, reduced the deficit.
However, Waterford took over after that, with Shane Fives, Wayne Hutchinson and PJ Rowe in inspired form in defence.
Points by Hammersley (3) and Ray McLoughney pushed them into a 0-17 to 1-9 advantage and, although O'Farrell pulled one back for UCC, it was fittingly left to Hammersley to have the last say.
