GMIT appeal Mahon ban

GMIT were last night frantically battling to overturn Ger Mahon's ban and free up the former Galway hurler to play in their Fitzgibbon Cup opener on Thursday.

The defender was sent off playing for the Galway college in the Walsh Cup against Laois and given a one-match and four-week ban, but GMIT felt he would be available for the Fitzgibbon Cup clash at Waterford IT. However, they were informed that the suspension would apply in the Fitzgibbon Cup, even though Mahon can still play for his club or county, and also in the Sigerson Cup. GMIT officials last night took their case to the Competitions Control Committee.
