Gleeson seals Trinity progress

Trinity College 0-12 Armagh 0-11

A 66th-minute free by Colm Gleeson proved pivotal as Trinity College, Dublin overcame Armagh by a single point in a tightly contested first-round encounter in Irishtown.

In a free-flowing first-half, both sides enjoyed periods of dominance, with Waterford senior panellist Paul Coughlan putting Trinity ahead with a sublime score in the second minute.

The visitors remained in touch through the dead-ball prowess of Matthew Lennon, with the lively corner-forward chipping in with two excellent points from play to push Armagh three points clear.

However, the students finished the half in the ascendancy with scores by Coughlan, Gleeson and Conor Donegan ensuring parity by the interval.

The second-half was a scrappy affair with Trinity gaining control through the defensive efforts of Jesse Kennedy and Jack King.

Despite the students falling behind to Lennon's seventh point of the match, they managed to secure the win through successive frees from Gleeson.
