Divilly sets tone for Kildare
A HIGH-SCORING first half set Kildare on their way to this facile victory over the Wee County at Darver.
It was the Lilywhites who made the most of the wet and windy conditions. A converted free from deep in his own half from Kildare's captain Paul Divilly set the tone of what was to follow as the visitors dominated.
The next few minutes remained tight as three scores from Gerard Smyth kept the home side in touch. However, by the 15th minute Kildare began to open up a commanding lead.
With two divisions between the sides, the gulf in class was clear and by half-time the game was over as a contest, with Kildare ahead 0-14 to 0-3.
As the weather worsened, the second half turned into a non-event. Three early scores from Kildare's Downey and Mark Maloney extended the visitors' lead. Louth threatened a mini-resurgence as frees from Shane Callan and Diarmuid Murphy got them up to seven points.
However, a goal from David Harney put paid to the home side's hopes.
