Deadly duo give Rossies edge in Athleague

Roscommon 3-11 Donegal 0-15

The twin threat of Cillian Egan and Gerry Fallon powered Roscommon to victory over Donegal in Athleague.

Donegal, who had beaten Roscommon in their last three meetings, began well with points from Lee Henderson (two) before the home team responded with two frees from Fallon and a Tomás Seale score from play. With Danny Cullen and Enda McDermott doing well at midfield, Donegal went three ahead on 17 minutes.

Fallon kept the home team in touch from placed balls before Egan struck for the first goal after 24 minutes. Cullen almost responded instantly but his stinging shot went over the bar. The exchange of points continued to half-time with Roscommon leading by 1-8 to 0-9.

A close second half looked in prospect but Donegal faded after Fallon's '65' went all the way to the net four minutes into the half. The Ulster team went 24 minutes without a score as Fallon hit three points.

After Henderson had an effort for a goal from a free saved, Roscommon swept downfield and Egan sealed victory when he batted a Fallon line ball to the net.

The home team, who were reduced to 14 when Darren Fallon was sent off, eased up in the closing stages and Donegal reeled off six points but never looked likely to turn it around.
