Cummins' goals sink Laois

Galway 4-24
Laois 2-17
(After extra-time)

TWO Richie Cummins goals in the opening period of extra-time were enough for Galway to prevail in a titanic battle with Laois yesterday.

The 2009 All-Ireland minor-winning captain only received the call-up to the squad on Saturday evening, but his inclusion paid dividends when his input finally fended off the O'Moore County challenge.

Laois were ahead 1-11 to 0-7 at the break, with John Rowney raising a green flag, but then failed to score for 25 minutes of the second half.

Midfield general Ger Farragher led the comeback with some fine points and the Castlegar clubman was to the fore again when his late effort sent the game into extra-time.

A crazy six-minute spell in the opening half of the extended period put the game to bed; Cummins bagged a brace, and full-forward Joe Gantley also sent an effort past Paddy Mullaney.

Not even a late goal from Willie Hyland could save Laois as the Joe Canning-less Galway side showed their class to advance.
