Council must opt for 12-team Division 1
THREE proposals for a revised format in the Allianz Hurling League go before Central Council today and I hope they opt for a 12-team Division 1, made up of two groups of six, followed by quarter and semi-finals.
Allowing the two top teams in 1B into the quarter-finals to play off against third and fourth in 1A is a good idea. Meanwhile, the top two in 1A qualify directly for the semi-finals. A broadly similar system applied years ago and, quite often, the teams from the lower division beat opponents from the top group in the knockout stages.
Giving teams from 1B the chance to win the league title outright would boost them and would also supply extra knockout games in April, when counties need them to sharpen up for the championship.
