Corbett boost for Tipp as talisman gets nod to start Munster final

Jackie Cahill

FORMER Hurler of the Year Lar Corbett will make his first competitive start of 2012 for the Tipperary hurlers in Sunday's Munster final against Waterford at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

Corbett (31), who came on as a substitute against Cork in the semi-final victory at the same venue and set up Noel McGrath for the crucial second-half goal, starts in place of the injured Gearoid Ryan.

Corbett returned to the Tipp squad less than a fortnight before the provincial quarter-final victory over Limerick -- and was not considered for that championship opener.

But Corbett, who shocked the hurling world by withdrawing from the Tipp squad in February, has returned to something approaching full fitness since then.

And that hard work has paid off, with manager Declan Ryan naming Corbett among the starters in the Tipperary attack.

Ryan is naturally conscious of the fact that Corbett wreaked havoc against Waterford in last year's corresponding fixture, bagging a sensational individual haul of 4-4.

Templederry Kenyons workhorse Gearoid Ryan is the one who misses out with a groin injury, but manager Ryan will be happy to have a player of Corbett's class to come in.

Wing-forward Ryan, who bagged two points against Cork before being replaced by Corbett, will consider himself unfortunate to miss out on the final.

Meanwhile, corner-back Michael Cahill, right half-back Tom Stapleton and key forward Pa Bourke have all been passed fit to face Waterford.

change

Corbett for Ryan is the only change in personnel from the team that started against Cork in the semi-final.

Tipp's 2010 All-Ireland-winning captain Eoin Kelly will have to be content with a place on the bench once again, after he was dropped for the victory over the Rebels.

Kelly will join the likes of Seamus Callanan, Shane Bourke and Donagh Maher on a strong list of Tipperary substitutes.

Midfielder James Woodlock has been ruled out after breaking a toe on club duty for Drom & Inch in a game against Loughmore-Castleiney.

TIPPERARY (SH v Waterford) -- B Cummins; C O'Brien, P Curran (capt), M Cahill; T Stapleton, C O'Mahony, P Maher; B Maher, S McGrath; P Bourke, P Maher, L Corbett; B O'Meara, J O'Brien, N McGrath.
