Convery on fire as Derry nick it late
DERRY 3-11 TRINITY COLLEGE 2-11
A 68th-minute goal from Jonathan O'Dwyer proved decisive as Derry squeezed through this quarter-final in Ringsend.
Laois native Colm Gleeson pounced for the opening goal for Trinity in the fifth minute, but the visitors responded as Ruairi Convery converted a penalty in the 25th minute.
Scores by Gleeson, Niall Redmond and Brian Hughes ensured a 1-9 to 1-6 interval lead for the students.
Points from Hughes and Redmond extended that advantage upon the restart but another penalty by Convery left the minimum between the sides by the 51st minute. The momentum appeared in Derry's favour as they took the lead for the first time, aided the stiff breeze at their backs.
However, an excellent solo goal by Paul Coughlan in the 63rd minute appeared to have swung the tie in Trinity's favour prior to Convery's superb fetch and pass allowing O'Dwyer to apply a match-winning finish from close range.
