Carlow no match for Laois

LAOIS 5-15 CARLOW 1-10 LAOIS senior hurlers advanced to a Leinster Championship quarter-final meeting with Dublin after they inflicted a humiliating defeat on Carlow at Portlaoise yesterday evening.

Carlow, who last week shocked Meath, never reproduced that form as Laois, who lined out without dual player Darren Rooney, took complete control in the second half.

Two goals in the opening half, from Liam Tynan and Damien Culleton, saw Laois ahead 2-11 to 0-5 at the interval. Carlow midfielder Pat Coady kept his side in touch with some well-taken points.

Liam Tynan opened the second-half scoring with a good Laois point but ten minutes into the half, Carlow midfielder Des Murphy struck for a well-taken goal. When the same player added a point, followed by another Coady point, Carlow had reduced the margin to eight points.

However, Laois hit back and a Culleton goal in the 50th minute saw them take complete control.

Coady added two further Carlow points but James Young replied with two for the home side. Ten minutes from time, Carlow had a great chance to get put some respectability on the scoreboard when they were awarded a penalty but the puck was saved by the Laois defence. Four minutes later Culleton added his second goal and Laois's fourth.

In the final five minutes, both sides had a player red-carded. First to go was Carlow's full back Shane Kavanagh and he was followed two minutes later by Laois substitute Mark Rooney.

Both were second bookable offences. In the final minutes of the game, Robert Jones scored Laois's fifth goal to complete a very comfortable victory for Paudie Butler's men.
