MONAGHAN just got the better of Louth in a scrappy affair in Aughnamullen.
The game mostly centred on frees, and the accuracy of Hugh Byrne (0-12) was central to Monaghan's victory.
Byrne opened the scoring for Monaghan, and Louth's first point came in the ninth minute from Diarmuid Murphy. In the final minutes of the first half, Gerard Smith struck a goal to put Louth five points ahead, 1-6 to 0-4.
Within a minute of the resumption, Louth extended their lead to six points with a well-taken score by Gary Rellis.
Monaghan did increase the tempo a little at this stage and as the pressure mounted, so Louth began to concede vital frees and with Byrne in fine scoring form, they paid the price.
Byrne hit three from placed balls to reduce the margin to three and when Martin Murphy took a further point off Louth's advantage, the game was in the melting pot.
Monaghan sub Christopher Morgan was then on target.
Louth had failed to raise a white flag for a considerable time and Eanna Mac Suibhne fired over, that left just one between the sides.
Monaghan pressure yielded two '65s', both converted by Byrne, the second of which in stoppage-time provided the winner.
