The nine-time All-Ireland winning manager is said to be “in good form” after the operation and selectors Martin Fogarty and Michael Dempsey will take charge of the running of the team in the coming weeks.

Cody was patrolling the sidelines in Kilkenny’s nail-biting win over Cork last Sunday but is unlikely to be back in time for their Division 1 semi-final against Galway on Sunday, April 21.

"Kilkenny Senior Hurling Manager Brian Cody underwent pre-planned cardiac surgery today and is currently recovering in hospital," a statement from the Kilkenny County Board read.

"He is in good form but has to take a break from team affairs for a number of weeks. In his absence Martin Fogarty and Michael Dempsey will be taking charge of the Senior Hurling Panel.

"The Co. Board asks that Brian and his family be afforded privacy for the duration of his recovery and will not be issuing any further statements.”
