Boyle blasts Kerry into semi-final
Kerry 3-18 Kildare 1-16
Kerry struck for three goals in the space of 11 first-half minutes to shake off a strong Kildare challenge and secure their place in the semi-final.
The home team hurled very impressively in the first half in Newbridge but will rue a couple of defensive lapses that were punished mercilessly.
The aerial presence of Padraig Boyle was a real threat for Kerry in that opening period and he scored 2-2 from play, while Shane Nolan's proficiency from dead balls was also significant as he finished with a 1-8 to his credit.
Gerry Keegan and Bernard Deay were dangerous customers in the Kildare forward division in the first half, and Deay should have had a goal but was denied by a splendid Tadhg Flynn save.
A major would have added to the Lilies' confidence as they started strongly despite playing into the wind.
A run of four consecutive points gave them a three-point advantage before Boyle levelled with an 18th-minute goal. The Ballyduff man followed up with a second after catching the sliotar in oceans of space before Shane Nolan converted a penalty to give Kerry a 3-9 to 0-11 interval lead.
Kildare goalie Paul Dermody got his side right back into the game with a goal from a 44th-minute penalty but Kerry finished strongly with six of the last seven points to bag the victory.
